Celebrating Dr. Melissa Lem: Winner of the 2024 Canadian Eco-Hero Award

In an era when environmental action is more critical than ever, it's important to recognize individuals who dedicate their lives to creating a healthier planet. This week, the prestigious Planet in Focus Canadian Eco-Hero Award was presented to Dr. Melissa Lem, Director of PaRx. Dr. Lem’s work exemplifies the profound connection between human health and the health of our planet, and her recognition as an Eco-Hero sheds light on the importance of this relationship.

The Planet in Focus Eco-Hero Award is presented annually to individuals who make exceptional contributions to environmental advocacy and sustainability. Past recipients include David Suzuki, known globally for his environmental activism, Canadian astronaut, author, and musician Chris Hadfield, and Margaret Atwood, novelist and poet.

Dr. Lem’s selection as this year’s Canadian Eco-Hero reflects her dedication to sustainable health practices and highlights her influential role as a healthcare provider who views environmental health as an extension of human health.

In addition to her role as Director of PaRx, Dr. Lem is the President of the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, and an internationally recognized leader in the field of nature and health. She has also engaged in advocacy and policy work on a broad range of other issues, from extreme heat and hydraulic fracturing to sustainable health care and low-carbon transportation.

A widely published writer, her work has appeared in media including the CBC, Vancouver Sun, Toronto Star, Montreal Gazette, The Narwhal and National Observer. As a climate change panellist on CBC Radio's Early Edition, in-house medical columnist for CBC TV Vancouver and Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia, one of her major priorities is knowledge translation.

Dr. Lem’s Planet in Focus Eco-Hero Award is a reminder of the importance of addressing environmental issues through multiple lenses. Her dedication to integrating environmental awareness into healthcare has made a lasting impact on both patients and the broader community. As we celebrate her achievements, we’re reminded of the importance of taking action—whether by spending time in nature, supporting eco-friendly policies, or simply raising awareness—to create a healthier, more sustainable world for future generations.
